PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Philadelphia first baseman Ryan Howard ruptured his left Achilles on the final play of the team's season, the Phillies announced Saturday.

Howard staggered out of the batter's box when he grounded out to wrap up the St. Louis Cardinals' decisive victory in Friday's Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, never making it to first base.

The Cards celebrated their series win as Howard lay on the field, writhing in pain.

The slugger was diagnosed with a ruptured Achilles tendon after magnetic imaging exam was performed and will undergo surgery once the swelling subsides, the team said.

There is no guarantee Howard will be ready for spring training after the procedure, the Phillies said in a news release.
