MIAMI, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The Miami Dolphins said Thursday quarterback Chad Henne had been lost for the season with a shoulder injury.

Henne will require surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder and was placed on injured reserve.

Coach Tony Sparano said Matt Moore will take over at quarterback for the winless Dolphins, who are idle this week.

The injury came in the first period of Sunday's game against San Diego. Henne failed to make connection on a would-be handoff to running back Lex Hilliard, who ran in the wrong direction on the play. Henne kept the ball and tried to run up the middle, but fell awkwardly on his shoulder.

Henne threw for 868 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions this season. Moore, who came to Miami after spending the previous four years with Carolina, went 17-of-26 for 167 yards with an interception against the Chargers.

Miami announced it had signed Sage Rosenfels as a backup quarterback. He was released by the New York Giants this week. Rosenfels spent four of his 10 NFL seasons with the Dolphins.
