MLS: New York 2, Los Angeles 0

HARRISON, N.J., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Luke Rodgers and Thierry Henry each scored Tuesday and Red Bull New York improved its playoff hopes with a 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Rogers booted a home a rebound off a point-blank save by Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts on a Tim Ream header in the 32nd minute, giving New York (9-7-16) all the offense it would need.

Henry added insurance with his 14th goal of the season in the 60th minute, collecting a through-ball in the box and flicking a shot over a charging Ricketts.

New York had been clinging to the final wild card spot but moved into a tie with Houston for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 43 points thanks to the victory.

Playoff-bound Los Angeles (18-4-10) fell short in its bid to clinch the Supporter' Shield for the best MLS regular-season record.
