PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Kenny Cooper scored the game's only goal in the first half Sunday and the Portland Timbers held on for a 1-0 decision over Vancouver.

Cooper received a long pass from Diego Chara at the far corner of the box, controlled it with his chest and unleashed a hard shot into the net past a diving Joe Cannon in the 25th minute.

Portland (11-13-7) tied New York in the wild card race with the victory, but the Red Bulls hold the edge in goal differential.

The expansion Whitecaps (4-16-10) have the lowest point total in the league at 22.
