WASHINGTON, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Eddie Gaven tallied the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute Sunday and the Columbus Crew broke a six-match winless skid with a 2-1 win over D.C. United.

With the score tied 1-1, Gaven put a diving header on a cross from Sebastian Miranda, sending it into the upper corner with power for the Crew (12-12-8), who vaulted into second place in the Eastern Conference.

Columbus caught a break after spotting United a 1-0 lead when D.C.'s Daniel Wollard scored an own-goal early in the second half. A Columbus shot heading toward goal hit the defender and trickled past goalkeeper Bill Hamid for the score.

Wollard also scored the only goal for United (9-10-11), which remains in sixth place in the East.
