CARY, N.C., Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Corey Pavin, seeking his first victory on the Champions Tour, shot a 7-under 65 Friday and had the lead after one round of the SAS Championship.
Pavin won 15 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1995 U.S. Open. He made eight birdies Friday and holds the lead at the end of a round for the first time this year.
"I'm trying to play a little bit better and did some really good work the last few days here," Pavin said. "I really felt a lot more comfortable on the golf course today than I have in a long time."
Nick Price, Kenny Perry, Russ Cochran and Gary Hallberg shared second place at 66. Perry is also trying to capture his first win on the Champions circuit.
Those tied for sixth at 67 included J.L. Lewis, Peter Senior, Rod Spittle and Jeff Sluman.
Only seven players who have led or co-led a tournament after the opening round this year have gone on to win the event.
