NEW YORK, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- The opening game of the Detroit-New York Yankees playoff series was suspended by rain Friday and was scheduled to resume Saturday night.
Detroit and New York were tied at 1-1 with the Yankees coming to bat in the bottom of the second inning when heavy rains forced the umpires to stop the action. After a lengthy delay and with radar showing showers would likely continue throughout the night, the suspension was announced.
Delmon Young hit a two-out homer in the first inning for the Tigers and Derek Jeter scored from third in the bottom half of the inning on a ground out by Alex Rodriguez.
Major League Baseball imposed new rules for the playoffs two years ago to ensure that every pitch of every post-season game counts. If Friday's situation had developed during a regular-season game, that contest would have been replayed in its entirety.
Game 1 will resume at 8:37 p.m. Saturday. The second game of the best-of-five American League Division Series will be played Sunday, which originally would have been an off day.
Detroit will host Game 3 Monday as planned.
Saturday's forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of rain during the evening.
The disruption of the series opener could have a dramatic affect on who pitches when for both teams.
The aces of the two staffs -- New York's CC Sabathia and Detroit's Justin Verlander -- started Friday's game. There was no early indication as to who would be on the mound Saturday when play resumes.
If neither Sabathia nor Verlander returns Saturday, which is the likely scenario, their limited amount of work Friday could allow them to pitch again on short rest. Such a decision, however, would alter the original starting rotation plans of the managers.
