ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Mike Napoli's second straight two-homer game Wednesday lifted Texas to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels and home-field advantage to start the playoffs.
Texas closed out its second straight American League West championship season with six consecutive victories and will take baseball's longest current winning streak into the post-season.
The Rangers will play the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the division series in Arlington Friday. Tampa Bay emerged from a dramatic evening as the AL's wild-card team by rallying to defeat the New York Yankees while Boston was losing a lead and the game to Baltimore.
The Central Division champion Detroit Tigers finished one game behind Texas in the standings and, with the third-best record in the league, will face the New York Yankees in the division series.
Detroit and New York open their best-of-five meeting Friday night.
Napoli hit a solo homer in the second and Texas held a 1-0 lead until Gil Velazquez delivered a sacrifice fly for the Angels in the fifth. Michael Young reached on a one-out single in the ninth and Napoli then crushed a two-out homer down the left-field line off Jordan Walden (5-5).
Mike Adams (5-5) got the win by working a scoreless eighth and Neftali Feliz survived a two-out double in the ninth for his 32nd save.
The 96 wins this season is a franchise high for the Rangers. The Angels finished 10 games behind Texas for second place in the division.
