MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Trevor Plouffe singled home Denard Span from second with two out in the ninth Wednesday, lifting the Minnesota Twins to a 1-0 victory over Kansas City.

The win allowed the Twins to avoid a 100-loss season, giving them a 63-99 mark and the second-worst record in baseball.

Plouffe's hit ended what had been a tremendous season-ending pitcher's duel between Carl Pavano (9-13) and Bruce Chen.

Pavano allowed five hits, struck out three, did not walk a batter and threw his first shutout of the year. Chen went eight scoreless innings, giving up eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Blake Wood (5-3) came on to work the ninth and he gave up a one-out double to Span. After getting Ben Revere on a grounder to shortstop, Wood surrendered Plouffe's single to left-center on a 1-0 pitch.

Kansas City wound up with a 71-91 mark, eight games in front of Minnesota for fourth place in the American League Central.

The Twins had to win their final two games to keep from losing 100. Minnesota has not had a 100-loss campaign in 29 years.
