DETROIT, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Jhonny Peralta hit the first pitch of the eighth inning for a home run Wednesday that lifted the playoff-bound Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 victory over Cleveland.

The Tigers entered the evening with hopes of having home-field advantage when the opening round of the playoffs begins Friday, but they wound up with the third-best record in the American League when Texas defeated the Los Angeles Angels.

Detroit, therefore, will take on the New York Yankees in the division round beginning Friday night. New York will host the first two games of the best-of-five series. Having won a division title for the first time in 24 years, Detroit finished the regular campaign with a 95-67 record and a four-game winning streak.

The Tigers overcame a 3-1 deficit and took a 4-3 advantage in the seventh when Miguel Cabrera scored on a wild pitch by Zach Putman. Cabrera went 2-for-4 and closed the season with the highest batting average in the majors at .344.

Cleveland tied it in the eighth by loading the bases and getting a sacrifice fly from Jack Hannahan, but Peralta put the Tigers in front to stay in the bottom half of the inning with his homer off Vinnie Pestano (1-2).

Ryan Perry (2-0) got the win despite giving up the run in the eighth, his only inning of work. Jose Valverde came on in the ninth to record his 49th save, most in the majors this season.

The Indians finished with an 80-82 mark, good for second place in the American League Central but a distant 15 games behind the Tigers.
