Sharapova wins second-rounder in Tokyo

TOKYO, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Maria Sharapova collected a straight-set victory Monday in a second-round match of the Toray Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament in Tokyo.

Sharapova defeated Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-2, 7-5 in advancing to the third round. She didn't face a break point in the first set and, even with dropping serve twice in the second, won 62 percent of the points on serve in the match.

Seventh-seeded Marion Bartoli topped local favorite Ayumi Morita 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 and No. 8-seeded Jelena Jankovic was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in other second-round matches.

Sharapova, Bartoli and Jankovic had first-round byes while Tanasugarn, Morita and Zahlavova Strycova played matches Sunday.

No. 12-seeded Ana Ivanovic needed just more than a hour for a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Anastasia Rodionova and 13th-seeded Julia Georges topped Pauline Parmentier 6-3, 6-4 in first-round play Monday.

Qualifier Mandy Minella also eliminated a Japanese player, beating Kimiko Date-Krumm 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Maria Kirilenko and Vania King each lost just one game in winning their first-round matches. Other winners Monday were Jarmila Gajdosova and Klara Zakopalova.
