PHOENIX, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A two-run triple by Paul Goldschmidt in the eighth Friday put Arizona in front and sent the Diamondbacks to a division title with a 3-1 win over San Francisco.
Arizona won the National League West championship for the fifth time in the team's 14-year history. The Diamondbacks are also celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their only World Series triumph.
The defending World Series champion Giants were virtually eliminated from all post-season hopes. In addition to having their division title hopes extinguished, the Giants fell five games behind Atlanta in the NL wild card race with five games to play.
Arizona trailed 1-0 heading into the seventh, but Goldschmidt scored the tying run in that inning on Chris Young's double.
Ryan Roberts then led off the eighth against Matt Cain (12-11) with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice by Aaron Hill. Justin Upton was walked intentionally, after which Miguel Montero flew out to shallow center.
That brought up Goldschmidt, who rocketed a triple to right field to give the Diamondbacks the lead.
With closer J.J. Putz on the mound in the ninth, Mark DeRosa reached on a lead-off single. Putz then got Pablo Sandoval on a strike out and retired both Orlando Cabrera and Aubrey Huff on fly balls to center to touch off the Arizona celebration. It was the 44th save for Putz, who preserved the win for David Hernandez (5-3).
Hernandez allowed a hit and struck out two in the eighth inning.
