Woman, 62, trying Cuba to Florida swim

HAVANA, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- A 62-year-old endurance swimmer embarked Friday on her second attempt in two months to make the 103-mile swim from Cuba to Florida.

Diana Nyad entered the water at Havana's Hemingway Marina at 6:05 p.m. local time with hopes of arriving on Florida's shore about 60 hours later, USA Today reported Friday.

The feat would award Nyad the world record for longest ocean swim without a shark cage.

"Don't listen to athletes when they say it's over," she told reporters at the marina before entering the water. "I'm in better shape than before. I'm more prepared than ever."

Nyad attempted the feat in early August but gave up after nearly 29 hours of swimming, making it nearly 60 miles. She said she had to call off the attempt due to a shoulder injury and problems with her asthma coupled with allergies to the medicine she took for her shoulder.
