PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Khari Stephenson scored on a long blast in the 70th minute Wednesday, lifting the San Jose Earthquakes into a 1-1 tie with the Portland Timbers.
Although Portland let a chance for three points slip away, the one point the Timbers collected moved them into the fourth and final MLS wild-card playoff spot. Portland is one point in front of New York, which suffered a 3-1 loss to Salt Lake Wednesday.
The Timbers (10-21-7) are unbeaten in their last five games.
Kenny Cooper scored in the 9th minute for Portland, beating Jon Busch with a shot from the middle of the box into the top left corner.
Stephenson's goal came from outside the penalty area off a pass from Rafael Baca.
San Jose (6-11-12) is seven points out of a playoff position.
