TORONTO, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Edwin Encarnacion led off the 12th inning with a home run Thursday that gave Toronto a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.
The Angels missed a chance to cut into the Texas lead in the American League West pennant race and remained five games behind the Rangers with six to play. Los Angeles also slipped three games behind Boston in the AL wild card chase.
The score had been tied at 3-3 since the seventh, when Toronto rallied for two runs -- one of them coming on a solo shot by Eric Thames. Jose Bautista scored the tying run later in the inning on a wild pitch.
Toronto put two runners on base with one out in the ninth without scoring and had the potential winning run on second with one away in the 10th without bringing him home.
Encarnacion made up for those missed chances with one swing of the bat. The home run came off rookie Garrett Richards (0-2), considered a prospect for next year's Los Angeles rotation who had recently been on the disabled list with a groin injury.
Shawn Camp (5-3) got the win by working the top of the 12th. He was the sixth Toronto pitcher.
