CHICAGO, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who took a kick to the throat during a game in New Orleans, said there is room for the team's offense to improve.

Cutler, who was sacked a league-high 52 times last season, spoke softly during a news conference due to his injuries and said he believes the team's defense "will be fine" but there is room for improvement on offense, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday.

He was hurt in Chicago's 30-13 loss to the Saints Sunday.

"We're doing some stuff well, we're not doing other things well," he said of the offense.

Tight end Kellen Davis agreed the offense needs to do more to protect Cutler.

"Jay is one of the toughest quarterbacks in the league. But we need to keep people off of Jay. He's huge. I mean, he is our offense," Davis said.

Coach Lovie Smith said protecting Cutler is a priority for the offense.

"We want to protect him more," Smith said. "He took too many hits the other day."
