Beaten Giants fan speaks

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan nearly beaten to death at a game in Los Angeles last spring, is speaking, his family's Web site has announced.

In a posting on Support4BryanStow.com, the family says Stow told his sister he loved her and when shown pictures of his children Tyler and Tabitha, said, "I would like to see them," the San Francisco Chronicle said.

He also spoke his children's names and his birthday, the newspaper said.

"We are blown away with all of this," the family posted. "Literally one day we got some facial responses and the next, he's talking.

"His voice is gravelly and you have to be close to hear him, but he is talking."

The breakthrough in his recovery at San Francisco General Hospital came about a week after doctors inserted a device to drain fluid from his brain.

"We are encouraged by Bryan Stow's continued neurological improvement and can report that he is beginning to talk again," Dr. Geoff Manley, the hospital's chief of neurosurgery, wrote in a statement following the family's disclosure. "However, he remains seriously injured and has several ongoing medical issues that we are currently managing.

"It is premature to predict where his long journey will end, and he is not out of the woods yet. We are monitoring him closely and treating him aggressively."

The 42-year-old Santa Cruz paramedic suffered the near-fatal beating outside Dodger Stadium March 31 after an Opening day game between the Giants and Dodgers.

Louie Sanchez, 29, and Marvin Norwood, 30, pleaded not guilty to the attack last month.
