MIAMI, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Javier Vazquez threw seven shutout innings Wednesday and the Florida Marlins added to Atlanta's late-season concerns by blanking the Braves 4-0.
Atlanta, trying to hold off its challengers in the National League wild-card race, began the evening with a 2 1/2-game lead over St. Louis and a 4 1/2-game cushion over San Francisco.
The Braves lost for the third time in four games.
Vazquez (12-11) struck out six and walked one in his second straight dominating effort. He was coming off his first complete game in six seasons, which he threw Friday against Washington.
He retired the first 10 men he faced before giving up a one-out single in the fourth. The only other hit off Vazquez was a two-out double in the seventh.
Edward Mujica worked a perfect eighth with two strikeouts. Leo Nunez walked two in the ninth, but preserved the shutout in a non-save situation.
Two of the runs came on solo homers by Brett Hayes in the fifth and Logan Morrison in the eighth. It was the 22nd homer for Morrison, who is in his first full season in the majors.
