BUCHAREST, Romania, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Joao Souza opened the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy tennis tournament in Romania with an upset Monday of No. 5-seeded Tommy Robredo.
Souza defeated Robredo 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) by holding serve nine of 11 times in the match. Souza had two breaks in the first set in grabbing the advantage.
The second set was very even -- both players won 44 points -- but Souza was able to come through in the tiebreaker.
Frederico Gil rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jeremy Chardy in the other main draw match on Monday's schedule. Chardy won the first set easily and was tied 4-4 in the second when Gil ran off five straight games. That gave Gil the second set and control of the third.
Juan Ignacio Chela is the No. 1 seed for the event. He won the 2010 edition of the tournament with a straight-set finals match victory over Pablo Andujar, who is seeded fourth in this year's draw.
