CINCINNATI, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Matt Downs belted a tie-breaking solo homer in the eighth inning Monday and the Houston Astros went on to down Cincinnati 3-2.

Cincinnati's Nick Masset (3-6) came in to pitch the eighth in a 2-2 tie game and Downs greeted him by golfing a 2-2 pitch over the left-field fence.

Wesley Wright and Mark Melancon (19th save) finished up with two scoreless innings, with the win going to David Carpenter (1-3), who worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the seventh.

Reds starter Travis Wood tossed five scoreless innings and Brandon Phillips homered as Cincinnati dropped the opener of a three-game series.
