Fish back to No. 7 in rankings

LONDON, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Mardy Fish returned to his career-high rank of No. 7 in the world in the updated ATP men's singles rankings Monday.

There were no ATP tournaments on the schedule last week in the wake of the U.S. Open and a round of Davis Cup play. Spain and Argentina advanced to the cup finals and will clash for the title Dec. 2-4 in Spain.

Fish moved ahead of Gael Monfils in the rankings in the only change in the Top 10. A little further down, Juan Martin del Potro continued his climb with an improvement of four spots from 17th to No. 13.

Novak Djokovic is No. 1 in the world and is assured of remaining in that position for some time even after he retired with an injury from a Davis Cup singles match Sunday. It was his third loss in 67 matches this year.

Djokovic said he was able to battle through a back issue in winning the U.S. Open but was "only 60 percent" for the Davis Cup series against Argentina. He said it was unclear how long he would need to recover.

He has 14,720 rankings points, well ahead of No. 2-ranked Rafael Nadal (10,260) and more than double every player other than third-ranked Roger Federer, who totals 8,380 points. Andy Murray is fourth with 7,165 and David Ferrer (4,200) is fifth.

Robin Soderling holds the No. 6 spot (3,770), with Fish totaling 2,820 and Monfils at 2,780. Tomas Berdych is right behind at 2,775 and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2,415) is No. 10.
