MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Minnesota first baseman Justin Morneau will be out the rest of year due to concussion symptoms and other injuries requiring surgery, the Twins said Sunday.

Morneau, who missed 81 games and the post-season last year due to a concussion, suffered another one this season during an Aug. 28 game while diving to field a ball, the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press reported.

The first baseman has also missed 56 games in 2011 due to neck, arm and wrist injuries, and in June underwent surgery to repair a ruptured disc in his neck.

Twins trainer Rick McWane told the newspaper Morneau will have more surgery Monday to remove a cyst from his left knee and bone spurs in his right foot.

"He's been sick and throwing up and having headaches because of the symptoms," McWane said, speaking of the Aug. 28 play against Detroit. "He didn't hit his head on the ground on the play. It was more of a whiplash jarring with his head."

The last-place Twins, mired in an eight-game losing streak, have also shut down catcher Joe Mauer and infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka for the season due to injuries.
