OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Cy Young Award favorite Justin Verlander racked up his 24th victory of the year Sunday, sparking the Detroit Tigers' 3-0 whitewash of Oakland.
Verlander (24-5) also is emerging as a strong candidate for American League MVP with his late-season dominance. He handcuffed Oakland on just three hits and three walks, notching a win in his 12th straight start.

The right-hander became the first AL pitcher to record 24 wins since Oakland's Bob Welch won 27 in 1990.
Austin Jackson led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a solo homer for the AL Central champion Tigers.
The Athletics' Guillermo Moscoso (8-9) was the tough-luck loser, surrendering only one hit over six innings -- Jackson's homer in the sixth.
