
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-3 while homering and driving in three runs Sunday and the Arizona Diamondbacks avoided a sweep with a 5-1 win over San Diego.
Miguel Montero belted a solo homer as the first-place D-Backs salvaged one win in a three-game series against the Padres and remained five games ahead of San Francisco in the National League West.
Joe Saunders (12-12) earned the victory with 8 2/3 solid innings. He worked around seven hits, allowing only one unearned run.
J.J. Putz was credited with his 41st save after recording the final out with two runners in scoring position in the ninth.
San Diego's Aaron Harang (13-7) took the hard-luck loss, yielding eight hits and two runs in six innings.
Jason Bartlett got the only RBI for the Padres.
