Former NBA player Orlando Woolridge arrested for theft
NEW YORK, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- The NFL says fans will be getting some additional scrutiny this weekend with a more-extensive pat down as they enter stadiums.
The league has recommended fans be frisked from the ankles up in order to discourage anyone from smuggling a weapon or some other contraband into the stands.
A league official acknowledged the enhanced search could slow down the security screening process, but said it would be worth the effort.
"The enhanced security procedures recommended by our office before the start of the season will further increase the safety of fans but will require some additional time," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told USA Today. "We encourage fans to come early, enjoy their tailgating tradition, and be patient as they enter the stadium."
USA Today said the change in procedure comes after a fan produced a stun gun in the stands at last weekend's Jets-Cowboys game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., and zapped some fellow spectators.
