
WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Veteran Javier Vazquez threw his first shutout in six seasons Friday, allowing five hits and bringing Florida a 3-0 decision over Washington.
Vazquez (11-11) is finishing up his 14th big league season and this was his eighth career shutout. He has won his last four decisions.
During his first 14 starts of the year Vazquez had a 6.85 earned run average. Since then he has gone 8-4 with a 1.96 ERA and has allowed only one earned run over his last 29 innings.
Florida scored all its runs in the first three innings and then turned things over to Vazquez.
John Buck had an RBI single in the second, after which Mike Stanton doubled home a run in the third and scored on a base hit from Gaby Sanchez.
The loss went to John Lannan (9-13), who gave up three runs on eight hits in six innings. He has been charged with the loss in six of his last seven starts.
