LOS ANGELES, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Clayton Kershaw allowed one hit over five innings before being kicked out of the game Wednesday and the Los Angeles Dodgers held on to down Arizona 3-2.
Kershaw was ejected when he hit Gerardo Parra with a pitch leading off the sixth inning in a continuation of an incident that began in Tuesday's Dodgers-Diamondbacks contest.
Despite Kershaw's ejection, he improved to 19-5 thanks to the work of three relievers.
Arizona had its lead over San Francisco in the National League West trimmed to 7 1/2 games. Its magic number remains at six.
Hong-Chih Kuo threw a pitch over Parra's head during Tuesday's game and Parra then homered. He stood at the plate briefly after the home run and when he crossed the plate he had words with Los Angeles catcher A.J. Ellis.
Kershaw was seen yelling at Parra from the dugout. When he hit Parra with the pitch Wednesday he was immediately ejected by home plate umpire Bill Welke. Los Angeles Manager Don Mattingly also was kicked out of the game.
Los Angeles had a 2-0 lead at the time, thanks to RBI singles in the first by Matt Kemp and Jerry Sands.
Arizona cut its deficit to one in the eighth but the Dodgers added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning when Aaron Miles singled in Kemp.
The Los Angeles bullpen combined to give up two runs on four hits over the final four innings. Kenley Jensen, who allowed one of the runs while working the ninth, claimed his fourth save.
Daniel Hudson (16-10) gave up the two first-inning runs and took the loss in a seven-inning effort.
