KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Melky Cabrera's first-inning homer touched off a 16-hit attack Thursday that carried the Kansas City Royals to a 7-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
The loss officially eliminated the White Sox from the American League Central pennant race, although they are still mathematically alive in the wild-card hunt.
Billy Butler's three-run homer in the sixth gave Kansas City a 6-2 lead and the Royals went on to win their fifth in a row. Yamaico Navarro added two RBI on a fifth-inning single and a seventh-inning sacrifice fly.
Jeff Francis (6-16) went six innings to collect the victory. He allowed two runs on eight hits while winning for just the second time in nine starts.
Mark Buehrle (11-9) absorbed the loss while giving up a season-high 15 hits and six runs in 6 1/3 innings. It was the sixth time this year he has surrendered at least 10 hits in a game.
