CHICAGO, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher left Chicago for Texas after the unexpected death his mother, team officials said.

"My mother, Lavoyda, unexpectedly passed away Monday at her home in Texas," Urlacher said in a statement released by the team Wednesday. "My first priority right now is to be with my family as we mourn her loss and make the arrangements to lay her to rest. This is a very difficult and emotional time for us and I sincerely ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you."

Urlacher's mother Lavoyda, 51, raised him, his younger brother Casey and older sister Sheri in Lovington, N.M.

Urlacher likely will be away from the team for several days and his status for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome is unclear, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

Urlacher scored a touchdown on a fumble return, intercepted a Matt Ryan pass and had 10 tackles in the Bears' 30-12 victory Sunday over the Atlanta Falcons.
