Wozniacki No. 1 but 8 changes in Top 10

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Caroline Wozniacki kept the No. 1 ranking but eight positions in the women's tennis Top 10 changed after the U.S. Open was won by Samantha Stosur.

Stosur beat Serena Williams in straight sets Sunday in claiming her first Grand Slam title. That boosted her from 10th to seventh in the rankings updated Monday.

Wozniacki, a semifinal loser to Williams, has a solid grip on the top spot in the rankings with 9,335 points. She has been No 1 for the last 30 weeks and 48 weeks overall.

The Top 10 shake-up can be linked to two-time defending champion Kim Clijsters missing the 2011 Open because of injury. She fell from third to ninth in the rankings. Vera Zvonareva, the 2010 U.S. Open runner-up, opened this year's final major tournament ranked second but lost in the quarterfinals to Stosur and falls to fourth.

Maria Sharapova, who went out in the third round, moves up to second with 6,226 points and Victoria Azarenka (6,055 points), improves two places to third. Zvonareva has 5,920 points.

Li Na, despite losing in the first round in New York, moved from sixth to fifth. She has 5,870 points. Petra Kvitova, another first-round loser, matched her career best by going from seventh to sixth with 5,539 points.

Stosur has 5,380 points ahead of Francesca Schiavone (4,775), who remains ranked No. 8. Clijsters has 4,501 points and Marion Bartoli, who slipped from ninth to 10th, has 4,225.

Williams moved from 27th to 14th in the rankings. Angelique Kerber, the fourth semifinalist, jumped from 92nd to 34th. Her previous highest ranking was 45th last January.
