MONZA, Italy, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Sebastian Vettel picked up his eighth Formula One win of 2011 with a victory Sunday at the Italian Grand Prix.
Vettel, driving for RBR-Renault, covered the 53 laps at the 3.6-mile Autodromo Nazionale Monza in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 46.172 seconds. Jenson Button, of McLaren Mercedes, was second 9.5 seconds later and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso was third, 16.9 seconds back of Vettel.
Alonso grabbed the lead from the pole-sitting Vettel on the race's first turn. After a crash slowed things, Vettel went ahead of Alonso on the fifth lap and led the rest of the way.
The win was the 18th of Vettel's career. He has eight victories, four seconds and a fourth over the 13 Formula One races this year, giving him 284 points in the drivers' standings. Alonso, with 172, is second while Button and Mark Webber are tied for third with 167.
Vettel could lock up his second consecutive driving championship at the next Formula One race Sept. 25 in Singapore. There are six races left in the 2011 Grand Prix calendar.
