DETROIT, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Brandon Inge belted a game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday, boosting the Detroit Tigers over Minnesota 3-2.
Minnesota's Glen Perkins (4-4) had gotten the first two outs of the ninth but Inge then connected for a long blast into the left field stands, handing the American League Central-leading Tigers their eighth straight win.
Wilson Betemit also homered for Detroit, which beat Minnesota for the 13th time in 17 meetings this season and reduced its magic number to clinch the division to nine with 19 games to play.
Al Albuquerque (6-1) earned the victory thanks to a scoreless top of the ninth. Tigers starter Max Scherzer yielded two runs on five hits over seven frames.
Minnesota's Anthony Swarzak, meanwhile, held the Tigers to two runs on four hits in a six-inning effort.
Joe Mauer hit a solo homer for Minnesota.
