DETROIT, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Alex Avila started a Detroit comeback with a three-run homer in the second Friday and the Tigers rolled to their seventh straight victory, 8-4 over Minnesota.
Detroit, closing in on its first division title in 24 years, had three home runs while rallying from an early 4-0 deficit. The Tigers expanded their lead in the American League Central to 9 1/2 games.
Danny Valencia finished off a four-run Minnesota first with a two-run triple but Avila hit his home run one inning later to bring the Tigers within one.
Detroit then took the lead with a three-run fourth, during which Wilson Betemit tripled in a run and then scored on Ramon Santiago's fifth homer of the season. Delmon Young added a solo shot in the fifth and Brandon Inge delivered a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Brad Penny (10-10) survived the difficult first inning to get the victory, eventually going five frames while allowing five hits.
Kevin Slowey (0-5) surrendered six runs on seven hits in four innings to take the loss.
