INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Peyton Manning underwent neck surgery Thursday, putting his return as quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts in further question.
It was the third neck surgery in 19 months for Manning. The Colts confirmed that Manning, 35, had the surgery described as a "single level anterior fusion."
Earlier in the week, Manning said he was "not healthy enough to play" in Indianapolis' season-opener Sunday at Houston. Kerry Collins, brought out of a one-month retirement by the Colts, will start in Manning's place.
Manning had started in 208 consecutive regular-season games, passing for 54,828 yards and 399 touchdowns.
Manning had neck surgery in spring 2010 and again this past May. Thursday's procedure was his third. The team announced said Manning had undergone additional testing that indicated another surgery was needed. The team said, "The surgery was uneventful."
It is unknown how long he will be out of the lineup.
