U.S. Open men's play rained out

NEW YORK, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Men's play at the U.S. Open was called off due to rain for the second straight day Wednesday, but not until players had complained of unsafe conditions.

After losing all of Tuesday's play due to inclement weather, officials began fourth-round matches pitting Rafael Nadal against Gilles Muller, Andy Roddick against David Ferrer, and Donald Young against Andy Murray, but later suspended play after only 15 minutes of action.

The move came after Nadal, Murray and Roddick each complained to tournament officials about being sent out to start their matches in the wet conditions.

Wednesday's men's schedule was also to have featured a quarterfinals match between Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a repeat of their Wimbledon quarterfinal, which Tsonga won.

Women's quarterfinals were set to played Wednesday night.
