Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Zach Stewart carried a perfect game into the eighth inning and the Chicago White Sox baffled Minnesota 4-0 for a sweep of Monday's doubleheader.
Stewart (2-3), making only his eighth major league start, breezed through the first seven innings without allowing a base runner. Alexi Ramirez made a diving stab of a Joe Mauer liner to end the seventh.
Danny Valencia led off the eighth with the Twins' only hit, a solid liner to right to break up the perfect game.
The victory enabled the White Sox to sweep a twin bill after winning the first contest 2-1.
Stewart, obtained from Toronto in a July three-way trade that sent Chicago's Edwin Jackson to St. Louis, threw 75 of his 114 pitches for strikes and didn't issue a walk while fanning nine.
Ramirez went 3-for-5 with a run-scoring single and Brent Morel added three hits, including a two-run single in the victory.
Twins starter Scott Diamond (1-3) yielded two runs on eight hits over five frames.
