Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Ryan Zimmerman's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday lifted the Washington Nationals to an 8-7 decision over the New York Mets.
The Nationals got a single from Jesus Flores (3-for-4, RBI) and Jonny Gomes drew a walk with no outs in the ninth off Bobby Parnell (3-5) and Roger Bernadina was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Zimmerman then broke his bat on a blooper to right that fell in front of a diving Lucas Duda, handing the win to Washington.
Nats starter Tom Milone clubbed a three-run homer but didn't get a decision after yielding four runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Instead, the victory went to Sean Burnett (5-5), who pitched a scoreless top of the ninth.
Nick Evans and Jason Bay each hit two-run homers for the Mets.
