SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Matt Cain worked eight innings Friday and San Francisco got a pair of two-run homers that lifted the Giants to a 6-2 win over Arizona.
The victory in the opener of the crucial three-game series allowed the Giants to cut the first-place Diamondbacks' lead in the National League West to five games.
Cain (11-9) allowed two runs on five hits and worked around four walks before Santiago Casilla cleaned up in the ninth in a non-save situation.
Arizona's Miguel Montero doubled home a run in the first but the Giants went in front with a three-run third that featured a two-run homer by Carlos Beltran.
Beltran also had an RBI single in the fifth and Cody Ross contributed a two-run blast in the seventh.
Joe Saunders (9-12) absorbed the loss, surrendering four runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings.
