CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Top draft pick Cam Newton will start for Carolina in its season-opener against Arizona Sept. 11, the Panthers announced.

"It's a big opportunity and a big responsibility to be a starter in this league," Newton said after Carolina's final pre-season game Thursday, a 33-17 loss to Pittsburgh.

Newton, who led Auburn to the national title and won the Heisman Trophy last season, won the starting job over Jimmy Clausen, a former Notre Dame star.

The Panthers were 2-14 last season, with Clausen and Matt Moore at quarterback.
