SEATTLE, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Ervin Santana survived seven walks and one big Seattle inning Thursday night to bring the Los Angeles Angels a 4-3 victory over the Mariners.
Los Angeles stayed within 3 1/2 games of first-place Texas in the American League West, the tightest division race in the majors.
Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer in the first and Howie Kendrick added a solo shot in the third to put the Angels in control.
Santana gave up two walks, two singles and a double in the third while Seattle was scoring three times.
The Mariners had runners on first and second with only one out before Santana got Miguel Olivo on strikes and Kyle Seager on a fly ball to left to end the inning.
Santana (11-9) lasted 6 2/3 innings to get the victory. Three relievers combined to hold Seattle without a hit over the final 2 1/3 innings.
Jordan Walden struck out one in a perfect ninth for his 27th save.
Charlie Furbush (3-7) was charged with the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in six innings.
