KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Asdrubal Cabrera hit a key two-run homer after fouling the ball hard off his left kneecap Friday and the Cleveland Indians held on to edge Kansas City 5-4.
Cabrera's blast in the third inning gave the Indians a 4-0 lead and when Cleveland took the field in the fourth inning he was removed from the game because he felt continued pain in the knee.
Jason Donald added a solo shot in the fourth for the Indians and Cleveland survived a Kansas City rally that included a two-run homer by Alex Gordon in the seventh.
Justin Masterson (11-8) gave up the four Kansas City runs on seven hits in seven innings. Vinnie Pestano and Chris Perez then retired the final six Royals in order to preserve the win.
Perez collected his 31st save.
The Indians remained 5 1/2 games behind first-place Detroit in the American League Central. They moved into second place by themselves, one game in front of the Chicago White Sox.
Bruce Chen (10-6) was touched for five runs on eight hits in six innings to take the loss.
