CHICAGO, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano, who was suspended, announced he was quitting, then changed his mind, won't play again this season, the team said Friday.
The Cubs said that although the right-hander won't play he will be paid after his 30-day suspension ends Sept. 11.
Zambrano was ejected from a game against Atlanta last month for throwing -- intentionally, officials said -- at two Braves players.
After the game, Zambrano, 30, declared he was retiring but later apologized and said he would always be a "Cubbie."
The Cubs put him on the 30-day disqualified list the next day and a grievance was soon filed with the players' union.
The team said Zambrano, once his suspension ends, would have "insufficient preparation time ... to pitch again this season."
Zambrano is 9-7 with a 4.82 earned run average in 24 starts in 2011.
