SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Three perjury counts against steroids scandal-tainted baseball home run king Barry Bonds have been dropped, U.S. officials indicated Wednesday.
Bonds, who was convicted on an obstruction of justice count in April, was still facing the three remaining perjury charges. But federal prosecutors filed notice in federal court the charges for making false statements to a grand jury had been dismissed.
The all-time MLB home run record-holder was convicted in April of obstruction of justice. He was found guilty of being evasive during 2003 testimony before a grand jury investigating a San Francisco-area lab that distributed steroids to athletes.
The jury in Bonds' trial, however, couldn't reach a verdict on the three perjury charges.
Prosecutors said Bonds lied when he told the grand jury he never knowingly took banned substances during his playing career.
The retired slugger is awaiting a December sentencing after being denied a new trial.
Bonds collected 762 career homers, including 73 for the San Francisco Giants in 2001, and is a seven-time MVP.
