ARLINGTON, Texas, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- James Shields worked out of a first-inning jam and then blanked Texas over eight innings Wednesday, lifting the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4-1 win over the Rangers.
Shields (13-10) struck out seven to reach 1,000 for his career. He loaded the bases with one out in the first, but then got Mike Napoli to ground into a double play and was overwhelming after that.
The Rangers managed only four hits against Shields before coming up with a run in the ninth off Kyle Farnsworth.
John Jaso singled in the first Tampa Bay run in the second and Desmond Jennings drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning. Matt Joyce had an RBI single in the third and Johnny Damon added a home run in the seventh.
Texas starter Alexi Ogando (12-7) was removed in the third inning, having given up three runs on five hits. He has won just once in his last five starts.
