SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Matt Garza kept the lid on the San Francisco offense Tuesday and wound up with the win in the Chicago Cubs 5-2 victory over the Giants.
Garza (7-10) was effective into the seventh inning, allowing nine hits but only a pair of runs and striking out six in Chicago's second straight win.
Alfonso Soriano homered and drove in two runs for the Cubs. Geovany Soto also drove in two and Carlos Marmol earned his 31st save.
Ryan Vogelsong (10-5) took the loss. He allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings.
Jeff Keppinger drove in both San Francisco runs with an RBI double in the fifth and single in the seventh. Keppinger's double was the only one of the Giants' nine hits to go for extra bases.
The fading World Series champion Giants have lost 21 of their last 30 games and are six games behind first-place Arizona in the National League West.
