Vick signs 6-year, $100M deal with Eagles

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Eagles said Monday they have signed quarterback Michael Vick to a six-year contract, reportedly worth $100 million.

Multiple media reports indicated Vick will make $40 million in guaranteed money and average more than $16 million during the first three years.

The signal-caller had been signed to a one-year deal under the franchise tag, which was worth $16 million.

Vick, 31, began last season as a back-up to Kevin Kolb after Donovan McNabb was traded, but took over the starter's role after the first game of the season.

He went on to pass for 3,018 yards and 21 touchdowns with six interceptions as the Eagles won the NFC East title.

Formerly a star with Atlanta, Vick spent 19 months in prison beginning in 2007 after pleading guilty to federal dogfighting charges.


SDSU's Fisher gets four-year extension

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- San Diego State men's basketball Coach Steve Fisher has received a new four-year contract, the school said Monday.

Fisher, 66, is heading into his 13th season at the helm of the San Diego State program. Since arriving from Michigan in 1999-2000, he has turned the program from doormat to perennial power in the Mountain West Conference.

The Aztecs racked up a 34-3 record last season and reached the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16, where they were beaten by eventual national champion Connecticut.

The team has gone 232-142 with four NCAA appearances under Fisher.

SDSU also announced Monday that longtime assistant Brian Dutcher has been tapped as Fisher's eventual successor.


Woodson joins Knicks' staff

NEW YORK, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Former Atlanta Hawks head Coach Mike Woodson has been hired as an assistant coach for the New York Knicks.

Woodson said he looks forward to working for Knicks head Coach Mike D'Antoni.

"I consider Mike D'Antoni to be one of the top coaches in our game and I am thankful for this opportunity," Woodson said. "I'm excited to rejoin this great franchise where my professional career started and will work to build off of the success they had here last season."

Woodson produced a 206-286 record as coach of the Hawks from 2004-10. He also has been an assistant for Milwaukee, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Detroit.

He played 11 NBA seasons for the Knicks, New Jersey, Sacramento, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston and Cleveland. He averaged 14.0 points in 786 career games.


Brazil's Zico to coach Iraqi soccer team

BAGHDAD, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Retired Brazilian soccer star Zico is the new coach of Iraq's national team.

The 58-year-old Zico has signed a one-year contract, replacing Wolfgang Sidka.

Iraq's first game under his direction will be Friday against Jordan.

His top priority is to get Iraq into the 2014 World Cup. The only time Iraq has qualified was in 1986.

Iraq is grouped with Jordan, China and Singapore in the third round of Asian qualifying.

Zico was Japan's coach from 2002 to 2006.
