BALTIMORE, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Freddie Garcia tossed six solid innings and Nick Swisher belted a two-run homer Monday in the New York Yankees' 3-2 victory over Baltimore.
Garcia (11-7) held the Orioles to one run on just two hits while walking one and fanning four in his first appearance since early August. The right-hander had been on the disabled list after cutting his right index finger in a kitchen accident.
David Robertson yielded a J.J. Hardy solo homer in the eighth, allowing the Orioles to pull to within a run, but Mariano Rivera closed the door in the ninth to rack up his 34th save.
Swisher's shot in the fourth made it 3-0 for New York, which moved to 1 1/2 games behind idle first-place Boston in the American League East.
Baltimore's Alfredo Simon (4-7) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in seven innings.
Mark Reynolds also clubbed a solo shot for Baltimore.
