
CLEVELAND, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- David Huff hurled six shutout innings and Carlos Santana homered Monday, sparking the Cleveland Indians to a 2-1 win over Oakland.
Huff (2-2) notched his first win since July 18, scattering six hits, walking two and striking out four for the Indians, who took the opener of a four-game series with the Athletics.
Reliever Joe Smith surrendered the A's only run in the seventh, Tony Sipp and Vinnie Pestano combined for a scoreless eighth and Chris Perez earned his 30th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Santana's solo blast in the seventh gave the Tribe a 2-0 lead. Kosuke Fukudome drove in Cleveland's other run with a sixth-inning RBI double.
Oakland's Brandon McCarthy (7-7) struck out 10 in a complete-game loss, allowing just the two runs on five hits while issuing one walk.
Jemile Weeks provided an RBI double for the A's.
