MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Luke Hughes drove in five runs with a pair homers Sunday and the Minnesota Twins avoided a sweep with an 11-4 rout of Detroit.
Hughes' two-run shot in the fourth game gave Minnesota a 6-2 lead and his three-run bomb in the seventh turned the contest into a runaway for the Twins, who broke an eight-game losing streak.
Jason Kubel connected for a two-run blast and added an RBI groundout while Justin Morneau went 3-for-4 with a run-scoring single as the Twins salvaged the final contest of a three-game set against the American League Central-leading Tigers.
Brian Duensing (9-13) snapped a personal five-game losing skid, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over six innings, walking three and striking out four.
Detroit's Brad Penny (9-10) was rocked for seven runs on eight hits before exiting after five frames.
Ramon Santiago went 4-for-4 with a two-run single for the Tigers.
