SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Matt Downs' RBI single in the 11th inning Sunday broke a deadlock and carried the Houston Astros to a 4-3 decision over the San Francisco Giants.
Jose Altuve doubled with one out in the 11th and Downs then smacked the first pitch from Ramon Ramirez (2-3) up the middle for a run-scoring single, putting the Astros on top.
Mark Melancon (7-4) earned the win despite allowing the Giants to tie the score in the bottom of the 10th on Mark DeRosa's RBI single. Rookie David Carpenter logged his first career save to preserve Houston's victory.
The Astros split their four-game series with the Giants, who fell four games behind Arizona in the National League West with Sunday's loss.
San Francisco collected nine hits -- all singles -- with Aubrey Huff and Orlando Cabrera picking up RBI in the loss.
